HIV Prevention in Practice: Practical Strategies for Frontline Clinicians

Description

This on-demand course provides primary care clinicians with a practical, evidence-informed approach to HIV prevention in Ontario. Through clinical cases and guideline-based discussion, learners will strengthen their ability to assess HIV risk using a non-stigmatizing, patient-centred approach, prescribe and monitor pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP), and counsel patients using the principles of treatment as prevention (U=U). Legal and ethical considerations related to HIV disclosure are also addressed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify patients at increased risk of HIV acquisition using clinical history, epidemiologic context, and intersecting structural factors
  2. Initiate, prescribe, and monitor HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) using Canadian guidelines
  3. Assess indications for non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) and initiate timely management
  4. Apply the principles of U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) in clinical counseling and risk assessment
  5. Navigate key legal considerations related to HIV disclosure in Ontario

Clinical healthcare providers who work with families affected by HIV, including but not limited to general practitioners, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, clinical social workers and psychologists, public health nurses, registered nurses, infectious disease specialists.
