Other Comorbidities

In recent years, a variety of chronic conditions have been identified as more commonly occurring in people living with HIV. Immune activation associated with HIV infection may result in the early onset of some conditions, such as heart disease, that are commonly associated with aging. This phenomenon is known as “immunoaging.” Other comorbidities, such as bone loss, may be side effects of antiretroviral drugs. This research focuses on developing tools to understand and monitor immune activation, and on the development of best practice approaches to screen for comorbidities and implement preventative treatment and effective care.
