HR manager

Position overview

The OHTN is in search of a dynamic HR Manager with functional competence in key areas of the HR discipline including: developing the annual strategic HR plan; supporting line managers in all aspects of hiring, onboarding, retention and succession planning; providing coaching for line managers in the effective delivery of feedback and performance evaluations; maximizing staff potential by supporting professional development; providing efficient benefits administration; and serving as a trusted resource person for individual staff on employee relations matters.

 Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, the HR Manager works with Management Team and staff at all levels of the organization, building the role as the go-to function for all HR matters.

 

Primary responsibilities

  • Develops the yearly OHTN HR strategic plan, building on previous progress to define strategy in talent management, including recruitment, coaching, retention succession planning, performance management and staff recognition
  • Develops multi-year HR strategic plan to identify and anticipate HR needs required to fulfill/implement OHTN’s Strategic Plan to 2026
  • Supports line managers in all stages of the recruitment process by contributing knowledge and providing effective tools to facilitate the process to ensure that the organization addresses its short-term and long-term needs
  • Partners with line managers on each hire to develop a clear profile of the preferred candidate to inform subsequent screening for appropriate motivation, education, career path and compensation expectations, experience, transferrable hard skills and personal attributes
  • Ensures openness and transparency by posting openings internally before external posting, and works with line managers to encourage suitable internal candidates to apply
  • Acts as an expert resource for line managers in developing interview questions, conducting insightful interviews, performing reference checks, preparing offer letters and ensuring appropriate authorization of job offers
  • Develops and delivers a personalized onboarding program for each new hire and the relevant hiring manager to support the successful transition of the new hire into the new role and the new culture
  • Acts an expert resource for line managers by providing relevant information and support across the full range of talent management challenges, such as developing staff for promotions, creating cross-functional roles, effective team-building and motivating staff in a multi-generational workplace
  • Promotes a coherent approach to staff retention by providing line managers with an overview and detailed understanding of its key components, including: hiring individuals who are the right fit for the role and the organization; motivation and acknowledgement of staff; timely feedback and recognition; career path planning; and ongoing development of staff
  • Fosters open communication with all employees by demonstrating approachability, supportiveness, judgment, adaptability and an open-door approach. Establishes strong working relationship with all staff and builds a reputation for integrity, empathy, fairness and straightforwardness
  • Acts as a trusted resource person for individual staff, maintaining employee confidentiality and providing guidance and advice on a wide variety of topics, including career planning, professional growth, job satisfaction and conflict management
  • Ensures that OHTN HR policies, procedures and practices are relevant and responsive and that they support a strong and healthy organization and are compliant with legislative requirements, including the Ontario Employment Standards Act
  • Reviews and updates the OHTN HR Manual annually to ensure up-to-date and complete information on policies and procedures
  • Establishes strong working relationship with all staff and builds a reputation for integrity, empathy, fairness and straightforwardness
  • Provide support to the management team in other areas as needed including organizing mandatory staff training, maintaining job descriptions and employee files, overseeing and managing leaves of absence including disability leaves, preparation of various HR related reports, assisting with AODA fulfilment requirements, and assisting with performance management and coaching.

Qualifications, experience, credentials

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in the field of Human Resources
  • CHRE / CHRL designation or equivalent required
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive HR experience
  • Experience in health care and not-for-profit sector is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to manage core HR processes such as talent management, succession planning, and employee relations
  • Ability to interpret, negotiate, develop and implement HR systems, policies, benefit plans and related labour relations legislation
  • Highly developed communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to deliver information in a variety of settings including executive meetings, and presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, meet tight deadlines, and work well under pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and leadership skills
