Call for Scholarship Applications

The North American Housing and HIV/AIDS Research Summit is pleased to announce a Scholarship Program to assist Canadian residents who require of financial support to attend the event on June 2-4, 2010 in Toronto. For more information, view the call for applications.

Finding Our Way in Research
Are you a person living with HIV, a person affected by HIV or a person working in a community based agency who would like to more involved in research? If so, this workshop is for you. Peer research assistants and investigators from a variety of community-based research studies will explore the evolving role of the peer research assistant in community-based research and share lessons learned working with and serving as a peer research assistant.
 
March 4, 2010 - 12 noon to 5 pm (lunch will be provided)

Vous vivez avec le VIH ou êtes affecté par le VIH? Vous travaillez pour un organisme communautaire qui voudrait s'impliquer davantage dans la recherche? Si vous avez répondu « oui », cet atelier d'une demi-journée est pour vous. Ensemble, des pairs adjoints de recherche et des chercheurs menant diverses études communautaires examineront le rôle évolutif des pairs adjoints dans la recherche communautaire et partageront des leçons apprises de ce travail et de la collaboration avec eux.

Positive Spaces, Healthy Places Study profiled in the CIHR Partnerships Casebook
CIHR recognizes that effective health research is the result of creative partnerships that identify gaps, fund relevant research and translate new knowledge into better health for Canadians. The agency has recognized Positive Spaces Healthy Places as an innovative example of an community-academic-policy partnership that is moving research to action. For more information, read the case study in English or in French.
Progress in Ending the US Travel Ban for People with HIV
People with HIV who wanted to attend the First North American Housing and HIV Research Summit in Washington, DC in June 2009, had to contend with the US travel ban. The restrictions provided an opportunity for event organizers to meet with senior US officials to discuss their impact on delegates and presenters. Since then, progress has been made. Family Front and Centre Participant Featured on the CBC News
On August 8, 2009, the Family Front and Centre community forum explored the impact of HIV on children and youth and the roles family can play in responding to and preventing infection.  The event was co-hosted by the OHTN and The Teresa Group, in partnership with the National Institute of Mental Health and the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity as a satellite of the American Psychological Association’s 2009 Convention.

2009 Summer Learning Institute on Interdisciplinary HIV/AIDS Research.
This Universities Without Walls inaugural event bought together graduate students, community members, and decision makers from across Canada for an intensive learning and mentoring experience July 13-17, 2009. For more information, visit the institute web page.
MOHLTC Health Research Showcase 2009.
The OHTN will present two posters at the 2009 Health Research Showcase, hosted by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care on October 8, 2009. One of the posters, “The OHTN Cohort Study: Understanding the Factors that Affect Health and Quality of Life for People Living with HIV/AIDS,” was selected for special recognition as a model for linking research and policy.
National Housing and HIV/AIDS Research Conference.
The OHTN attended the annual conference in early June in Washington DC and presented a plenary session highlighting findings from Positive Spaces Healthy Places and posters on food security and HIV and HIV/Hepatitis C coinfection.
Women’s HIV Empowerment Through Life Tools for Health Project is a community-based research project.
HIV/AIDS documentary
Positive Voices: Leading Together is an OHTN produced feature-length film which guides viewers through the personal experiences of five local community leaders living with HIV.
Building Bridges
The AIDS Bureau Building Bridges: an analysis and summary of the HIV/AIDS community planning initiative in Ontario.
STARHS Symposium
The OHTN sponsored a special symposium on Serological Testing Assays for the detection of Recent HIV Seroconversion (STARHS) held in conjunction with the AIDS 2006 Conference.
