OHTN-CIHR Café Scientifique
Generation Sex, Y, and Z - Sex Ed for Youth by Youth
Although Canadian youth ages 10 to 24 represent a small proportion of the total number of reported HIV cases in Canada, risk behavior research on young Canadians show potential
for HIV transmission among this group. A recent national study found that more than half of grade nine and eleven students think there is a vaccine cure for HIV/AIDS. In March 2010,
OHTN-funded researcher Sarah Flicker and a collaborative group of peer youth health educators led a public discussion on youth sexual health education and using a peer education
approach as an effective HIV prevention strategy among Canadian youth.

HIV & Herpes, More than just a pain in the pants?
Most people don’t realize that about one in five Canadian adults is infected with genital herpes. Research suggests that herpes may be fuelling the spread of HIV and worsening HIV disease among people infected with HIV. In April 2010, OHTN-funded physician-researchers Dr. Darrell Tan and Dr. Rupert Kaul, and Dr. Anu Rebbapragada led a public discussion on the effects of herpes among people and communities affected by HIV.
