Casey House HIV/AIDS and Mental Health Seminar on November 26

Casey House will host its next HIV/AIDS and Mental Health Seminar on November 26, 2010, in Toronto. This midday seminar on “Working with the Suicidal Client” will focus on the concerns that arise when working with a suicidal client and the possibilities for intervention, including providing information on suicide and the emotional literacy model. York University Series on Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention in Racialized Communities starts on November 29

The Accessibility, Community, Equity Committee, the Faculty of Environmental Studies, the York Institute for Health Research and the York Federation of Students is pleased to present a mini series on Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention in Racialized Communities to be held the week of World AIDS Day from November 29 to December 2, 2010, at York University. This 4-day mini-series will explore the challenges racialized communities face in accessing health education and HIV prevention services. For more information, see the event series poster

African and Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario: Symposium on Race, Law and HIV Exposure in Ontario on December 1

On December 1, 2010, the African and Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario (ACCHO) will hold the symposium, Criminals and Victims? Race, Law and HIV Exposure in Ontario, to launch their new report on the impact of the criminalization of HIV non-disclosure on African, Caribbean and Black communities. Criminals and Victims? will influence policy and practice and empower ACCHO's partners working with and/or for African, Caribbean and Black community members to be able to navigate the issues related to criminalization of HIV-non disclosure from a more informed perspective. The event to be held at the University of Toronto will be simultaneously broadcast on the Internet. Celebrating Youth Film-Makers: World AIDS Day event on December 2

Come check out a series of short films by youth film-makers on HIV and AIDS, gender and identity on the evening of December 2, 2010, in Toronto. A Question and Answer session with youth film-makers will follow the films. This is a free event. Dinner will be served! Ministerial Advisory Council on the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada: Call for Membership Applications due December 13

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), on behalf of the Minister of Health, is seeking applications to renew the membership of the Ministerial Advisory Council on the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada (Council).The Council is a group with broad individual and collective expertise in HIV/AIDS appointed by the Federal Minister of Health to provide evidence-based strategic policy advice to the Minister of Health on pan-Canadian aspects of HIV/AIDS. The goal of this selection process is to ensure that Council's membership reflects a range of expertise capable of addressing the essential aspects of HIV/AIDS in Canada, and is representative by ethno-cultural diversity, gender and region. CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network: Postdoctoral Fellowship Award Applications due January 31

The CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN), in cooperation with the OHTN, is pleased to announce the 2011–2012 competition for the CTN Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards Program for MDs and PhDs. The Awards Program facilitates HIV and co-infections research by providing funding to candidates who wish to write a trial protocol, research program, and develop and run their trial. Each award is worth $50,000 plus up to $5,000 in a travel allowance on expenses claimed. The application deadline for the 2011-2012 competition is January 31, 2011. CALLS FOR ABSTRACTS

2010 Student Research Expo on HIV and AIDS: Presentation Proposals due November 25

The CIHR Social Research Centre in HIV Prevention (SRC), the Public Health Student Association, the Centre for International Health, and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health invite you to participate in the 2010 University of Toronto World AIDS Day (December 1st). The day will involve an open forum with University of Toronto students and faculty presenting their local and global work in the field of HIV in the 2010 Student Research Expo on HIV and AIDS. Students with creative ideas to present their research, including through posters and arts-based presentations (poems, spoken work, art work, etc.), are invited to submit a short proposal by 11 pm EST on November 25, 2010. Canadian Public Health Association 2011 Annual Conference: Call for Abstracts due December 6

The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) is pleased to announce the Call for Abstracts, Workshops, Pre-conference and Breakfast Sessions for the CPHA 2011 Annual Conference on Public Health in Canada:  Innovative Partnership for Action to be held in Montreal on June 19-22, 2011. Public health professionals, researchers, policy makers, academics and students from across the country and around the world will meet in Montreal, Quebec, as CPHA enters its second century of service to Canadians. The Conference will explore the role of partnerships in creating the conditions in which people can lead flourishing lives and will showcase innovative collective actions that support the maintenance and improvement of the health of populations. 20th Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research: Call for Abstracts due December 13

The 20th Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research - CAHR 2011 - will be held April 14-17, 2011, in Toronto, Ontario. The theme of CAHR 2011, “Honouring our history, embracing our diversity” will honour the time and efforts of Canadian researchers, health care providers, community members and people with HIV to develop more effective HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. The Program Planning Committee invites abstracts in the areas of Basic Science, Clinical Science, Epidemiology and Public Health, and Social Sciences. Abstracts may be submitted and presented in either English or French. The deadline to submit an abstract is December 13, 2010. For more information, please visit the Conference website.

2010 OHTN Research Conference Program and Presentations Now Online

The  2010 OHTN Research Conference Program Book, electronic poster collection, and the online, searchable Program-at-a-Glancewith presentations are now available on the OHTN website. This year’s conference brought together over 600 participants from across Ontario and Canada, the United States, Australia and Nigeria, including health care practitioners, frontline service providers, people living with HIV, policy makers, and HIV researchers, and featured an exceptional program of over 200 expert guest speakers and abstract presenters. The 2010 Conference provided a unique opportunity for OHTN members and stakeholders to exchange the latest knowledge on effective interventions designed to target HIV as well as other factors, such as comorbidities and social determinants of health, that intersect with HIV to increase vulnerability, decrease health-related quality of life, and complicate care and treatment.
