The Ontario Native Women's Association (ONWA) and the Centre for Research on Inner City Health (CRICH) at St. Michael's Hospital are conducting a research project with Aboriginal women engaged in sex work in Toronto and Thunder Bay. They require two part-time/casual Peer Interviewers to start in June 2011.


The successful peer interviewers will conduct and analyze one-on-one interviews with research participants. They will be provided training and may be required to assist in study recruitment.

Free Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony
June 9 

 

The Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and Human Rights Watch will present its 2011 Awards for Action on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights to: 

  • The Caribbean Vulnerable Communities coalition and its late
    co-founder, Dr. Robert Carr (International Recipient)
  • Prisoners' HIV/AIDS Support Action Network (Canadian Recipient)

The award ceremony will be partnered with a free public lecture titled "Sex, Work, Rights: Challenging the Criminalization of Sex Workby Alan Young, counsel in the landmark Ontario case Bedford v. Canada, involving a constitutional challenge to Canada's prostitution laws. Professor Young will discuss the history and evolution of the criminalization of prostitution in Canada, its impact on the health and safety of sex workers, the steps and strategy taken (and obstacles faced) to launch the constitutional challenge in Ontario, and the anticipated impact of the decriminalization of prostitution in Canada.

No registration is necessary. This event is part of the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network's 3rd Symposium on HIV, Law and Human Rights, taking place on June 9 to 10, 2011.    

Symposium topics include:   

  • The role of litigation in addressing issues related to human rights and HIV in Canada
  • Criminal prosecution of HIV non-disclosure cases
  • Constitutional challenges to Canada's prostitution laws
  • Application of Canadian drug laws to supervised injection sites
  • Health policy issues in the media, and the use of social media tools for community engagement

Recruiting Participants Who Are HIV-Negative 


Positive Spaces Healthy Places (PSHP) is the first multi-year Community-based research initiative in Canada to examine housing and health in the context of HIV. PSHP is currently recruiting 200 - 300 people who have tested HIV negative in the past year. Participants' results will be compared to our already established group of 600 people living with HIV/AIDS.

 

This comparison group will help to provide more accurate estimates of the nature / strength of the housing stability and health relationships.

Seeking Research Participants
  • Are you 15 to 29?
  • Are you HIV positive?

Sexual Health Matters is seeking research participants for a community-based study that will look at HIV disclosure experiences, concerns and needs of HIV-positive youth in Canada. Research participants will engage in an individual, confidential interview and then complete a short questionnaire regarding support services (sexual health, social support).


The knowledge obtained from this study will assist HIV-positive youth and educators to support safe and successful disclosure of HIV status. This research is also intended to enhance the ability to create and implement education, support and prevention programs tailored specifically at the sexual health and health status disclosure concerns of youth. 


The study, conducted by Tamara Landry, a PhD Candidate at The University of Western Ontario, was awarded an Ontario HIV Treatment Network studentship award and a Social Research Centre in HIV Prevention trainee award.

The North American Housing and HIV/AIDS Research Summit VI will take place in New Orleans from September 21 to 23. The Summit will themed: Eliminating HIV/Health Disparities: Is Housing the Key to Ending the AIDS Crisis?

 

Keynote speakers will include Nigel Fisher, former CEO of UNICEF Canada and Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti and Libby Davies, Member of Parliament for Vancouver East. 

 

Early-bird registration ends July 31, 2011. Scholarship opportunities are available for Ontario residents.

Rainbow Health Ontario is calling for proposals for its second bi-annual provincial conference that focuses on the health and wellness of LGBT communities. It will take place from March 20 to 23, 2012, in Ottawa.

 

The conference is seeking proposals for:

  • Seminars
  • Workshops
  • Panels
  • Thematic research sound bytes
  • Poster sessions

Proposals should address various ages and stages of life in the following categories:

  • LGBT emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health and wellness
  • Recent LGBT health research from Ontario and Canada
  • Innovative and creative LGBT health promotion programs
  • Public policy and activism: current issues and strategies
  • Education and training: effective teaching tools and resources 

The deadline to submit an abstract is September 16, 2011

Anu Rebbapragada talks about her research on HIV and HPV in African and Caribbean women. Anu was a presenter at the 2010 OHTN Research Conference
in Toronto, Ontario.


The OHTN partnered with Positive Lite to ensure the most recent HIV research data is available to the community. In each online video, local or international experts talk about their work in easy-to-understand language.
